How do you pour a glass of wine?

02.17.10

You need to have the appropriate glassware depending on the type of wine you will be serving.

White wines should be served in tulip shaped glasses, red wines in a more rounded and larger bowl glass, and sparkling wine in a tall and thin glass. When you do not have all types of glasses recommended, a suitable all-purpose wine glass should hold 10 ounces, be transparent and have a slight curve at the top.

Leave each wine glass on the table, and pour the wine into it. Pour toward the center of the glass, except if the wine is sparkling in which case pour against the side of the glass to preserve bubbles. Twist the bottle as you tilt and pour it to control drips. Face the label towards the guest so they see what they are drinking.

When a guest wants to test the wine you will pour approximately 3 ounces into their glass. Once the guest has approved the wine you will proceed to pour the standard 5 ounces or no more than two-thirds full. This allows room for the guest to swirl it, if they choose. Serve women and older guests first, then men and end with yourself.

Messina Hof Winery offers wine appreciation classes where you can learn the proper amount to pour into the glass and the appropriate glasses for the different types of wine. All classes are offered on the last Sunday of the month at 3:00 pm.
