An email, inviting me to take a trip to Messina Hof Winery in Bryan, TX, made my day last week. I love the ambiance of a winery and the unusual (cooler) August weather was perfect for the Moonlight Harvest Kickoff 2014.

I enjoy wine, wine tastings and wine tours (yes, yes… I like wine!), bu though I had seen bottles of Messina Hof in our local supermarkets, I had never actually been to the winery there.

Our group of media VIP’s gathered for a grape harvest, wine stomp and dinner, which insured we were in for a great evening… starting with a 4 hour wine tasting on a limo bus. Messina Hof has to be some of the best wine I’ve tasted in a long time… thank you!

The Harvest Festival celebrated its 37th year with traditional picking, blessing and stomping of the grapes, but this year was met with a huge announcement! The Bonarrigo family and Grapevine Mayor William D. Tate announced that Messina Hof will soon open its third location at the Wallis Hotel in historic Grapevine, Texas!

“We are thrilled to be opening an urban winery in Grapevine,” said Paul M. Bonarrigo, chief executive officer, Messina Hof Winery. “This new Grapevine winery will allow us to have a presence in the most dynamic wine center in Texas.”

The urban winery will be located in the Wallis Hotel at the corner of Main and Texas Streets in the heart of Historic Downtown Grapevine and is expected to open in late 2014. The urban winery joins a collection of wineries and tasting rooms throughout the city of Grapevine.

In a community steeped in tradition, Messina Hof Winery holds its own with a 200-year history of award-winning wines. Although the winery itself was officially established when with the first vintage release in 1983, the rich wine heritage of Winemaker Paul Bonarrigo dates back six generations to Messina, Sicily. Merrill Bonarrigo’s family originates from Hof, Germany. Together they have pioneered the Texas wine industry in creating premium wines of distinction and a landmark wine country destination.

It was a great evening, with a little history, a great dinner, amazing friends and lots of fun! And while you’re waiting for Messina Hof to come to Grapevine, make sure you head to the winery in either Bryan or Fredericksburg, TX to check out the Annual Harvest Festival.

The annual event celebrates the bounty of the vineyard, in a public harvest setting similar to European harvesting practices of centuries past. Patrons, friends and family near and far congregate in the pursuit of grape picking, stomping and wine tasting/dining. Eight specialty dinners punctuate these four weeks, inclusive of Moonlit Harvest: The Search for the Golden Grape and Grand Finale Gala: Label Tribute.
