Texas’ Messina Hof Winery Wins Gold Medals at Largest Officially Recognized Wine Competition in the World: AWC Vienna
The winery also took home more than 44 other awards including Best in Class at both the 2018 Houston Live Stock Show & Rodeo and the 2018 San Antonio Rodeo International Wine Competitions
January 2018 (BRYAN, TEXAS) –Messina Hof Winery, the most award-winning winery in Texas, closed out an exceptional 40th anniversary year with numerous achievements at 2017 AWC Vienna, the 2018 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo RodeoUncorked! International Wine Competition,and the 2018 San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo International Wine Competition, adding to its more than 1,200 awards in national and international competitions since opening in 1977.
As the international leader of quality awards for wine, AWC Vienna tasted nearly 1300 wines from more than 180 countries for its 2017 competition. Messina Hof’s Paulo Sagrantino 2015 became one of the first Texas wines to achieve a Gold Medal at AWC Vienna in 2017, the largest officially recognized wine competition in the world. Messina Hof is the first Texas winery to produce a Sagrantino, a varietal not widely known outside of Italy, but that thrives in Texas conditions giving it a rich pigment and intense tannins. Following the gold at AWC Vienna, Messina Hof was awarded 24 total medalsincluding six Gold Medals, three Class Champion awards, 14 Texas Class Champion awards and a Double Gold for its Reflections of Love 2015 blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Primitivo at the 2018 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Rodeo Uncorked! International Wine Competition*. One of the largest international wine competitions held in Texas, there were more than 3,000 entries from 18 different countries.
At the 2018 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo International Wine Competition**, Messina Hof received the highest number of awards for any winery, achieving Best of Herd Winery for the eighth time. Overall, the winery received 22 awards – four Gold Medals, eight Silver Medals, and eight Bronze Medals – including Top of Class and a Gold Medal for its Private Reserve Tempranillo 2016.
