Things to Know About Messina Hof’s Merlot

09.14.17

It’s been a busy week for our production crew with grape trucks delivering various grape varietals like Chenin Blanc, Tempranillo and Merlot! Speaking of Merlot, it’s no secret that Messina Hof stands above the rest in its category – just ask the judges of the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Earlier this year, our 2015 Private Reserve Merlot won Best of Class at what is dubbed the “Largest Competition of American Wines in the World.” Here are a few more fun facts about Messina Hof Merlot…

Messina Hof’s Merlot comes from 4 vineyards located in the Texas High Plains – Mark Schofner Vineyards, Hendricks Family Vineyard, Smotherman Vineyard and Cerro Santo Vineyard. Pictured below is the Merlot that arrived on Wednesday, September 13.

Messina Hof produces multiple tiers of Merlot wines, including our Paulo Series. The Paulo name originates from the Bonarrigo family tradition that the first-born son of each generation is named Paul, or Paulo. Today, Messina Hof founder, Paul V. Bonarrigo with his son, Paul M. Bonarrigo, personally select the best grapes to handcraft into rich, premium, distinctive wines.

Oak aging gives Messina Hof’s Merlots a silky-smooth tannin structure and a finish that lingers on the palate. Try pairing our Merlot with dishes that contain lamb, pork, and pastas with hearty sauces.

Messina Hof’s Merlot has an award-winning history, earning honors as early as 1992. One of Paul V. and Merrill’s favorite memories was in 2003, when Messina Hof’s 2001 Private Reserve Merlot won Best of Show at the New Orleans Food and Wine Experience.
