Why Do We Age Wine?

03.24.23

Looking for a wine that is smoother, bolder, and older? Let us introduce you to Messina Hof’s Library wines. We have hand selected these wines, and carefully stored them for years at our winery, waiting for the perfect time to put them back on the shelves. Indulge in almost a decade’s worth of aging with little to no wait to you!

While aging is a core part of the wine-making process, most wines are ready to sell after 1-2 years of aging before bottling. Additional aging gives the overall wine body a more rounded, smoother tannin structure. Wine continues to taste better with age due to a chemical reaction among its’ phenolic compounds, that allows the sugars, acids, and substances in the wine to formulate a more complex and pleasing flavor profile.

In the wine industry, “Library Wine” is the popular used term to describe the vintages held back by the Winemaker to be re-released and sold exclusively years after the original debut. The name stems from our private cellars that we refer to as “libraries” where these wine age.

Wines that typically age best are those that consist of a full-bodied robust structure, and a higher alcohol percentage. Wines that are best for aging are Sangiovese, Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah, and Pinot Noir. Not only do these red wines do well waiting a few years before consumption, they need it to fully develop the flavors you love. Any wine that is high in tannins or acidity thrives with additional aging so you can enjoy every tasting note with a smoother, more delicate mouthfeel with each sip.

For all you white wine lovers, don’t worry, white wines can also undergo aging. Varietals such as Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Riesling, and Sémillon do well sitting a little longer on your shelf. These can age for an additional 2-4 years.

A popular rule of thumb is that even though there might be a little dust on the bottle, don’t let it fool you about what’s inside. Messina Hof Library wines keep getting better with time. Next time you visit the winery, ask about these special vintages and sip on a piece of history preserved in a bottle.

You can shop these aged wines at any of our winery locations (Fredericksburg, Grapevine, Richmond, and Bryan) or shop online to have it delivered right to your door!
