Why Don’t You See Many Cabernet Francs?

01.14.11

Cabernet Franc is my new favorite varietal. I find wines that I particularly like and then experiment with them. There are not many Cabernet Franc’s in the market place. It is a grape that has such a deep history as the father of Cabernet Sauvignon and a regular blender for Bordeaux wines. It is considered the ancient of grapes.

Most wineries continue to use it as a blending grape. In many areas, the grape creates a wine that it a little edgy. But in Texas the grapes ripen to a rich luscious fullness that does not exhibit that edgy character.

The Cabernet Franc is big, earthy, and muscular. It goes fabulously with umami rich dishes and is my favorite wine with a big juicy steak.
