Winemaker to Winemaker Quinta da Pacheca

03.18.11

Generational ownership and leadership bonded Paul and the current duo-generational owners of the Serpa Pimentel family. Quinta da Pacheca is one of the oldest of the family estate wineries in the Douro. Through the Maple-lined drive up to the red and white tile roofed buildings, the old- world feel of the property masks a very modern new guest house and attitude toward tourism.

Visionary planning, generations ago, allows the facility today to accommodate new equipment, continued use of original grape stomping vats, widely planted vineyard rows which accommodates today’s tractors, and an understanding of tasting room tourism.

The wines were great, the hospitality first class, and history rich. And why are the roofs red and white? The white areas showed workers where they could safely walk without breaking the tiles.
